Platform Leather Clogs

Platform is a sole decision, not a heel decision

A platform clog adds height under the whole foot rather than lifting the heel. Your foot stays close to flat, the ankle stays neutral, and the weight distribution barely changes. This is why a 5cm platform is comfortable in a way a 5cm heel is not.

The trade is proprioception. You are further from the ground, the sole is stiffer, and uneven surfaces are harder to read. Stairs take a few days to adjust to.

Wooden platforms versus moulded

Wooden bases — the Swedish tradition. Completely rigid, heavy, audible on hard floors, and effectively permanent. The upper wears out long before the base does, and a cobbler can re-nail it.

Moulded EVA and cork platforms are lighter, quieter and have some give. More comfortable for walking distances, less durable, and they compress over a couple of years.

How high is usable

Most people find 3–5cm the range where a platform still walks naturally. Above about 7cm the sole has to be rigid enough that your foot cannot roll through the step, which is why tall platforms are almost always wooden or heavily built up.

Fit, which is different on a platform

A platform clog holds through the instep, not the heel, and there is more shoe to lever against your foot. A strap or buckle matters more here than on a flat clog — without one, a platform mule slips at the heel on every step and you compensate by gripping with your toes.
