What to know about this mule
Birkenstock's footbed carries a deep heel cup, a raised toe bar and a pronounced arch. All three feel like too much in week one and like the point by week four. Suede is soft from the first wear because there is no surface finish to break in — and no surface finish to protect it either. A protector spray from day one is not optional.
Cork wants sealing once or twice a year at the exposed rim. Untreated, it dries and crumbles at the edges; sealed, it lasts as long as the shoe.
The buckle is what makes this workable on a high instep. Anything with a fixed vamp will press across the top of the foot and will not stretch enough to fix it. Built for jobs spent upright. Standing still and walking punish feet differently, and this is built for the first.
Tan shows grain and wear more honestly than any other shade, and darkens the most over the first year. Leave about a centimetre in front of your longest toe, and check that your foot is not spilling over the sides of the footbed — that is a width problem, not a length one.
Keep them away from radiators and direct sun. Heat is what cracks leather uppers and delaminates soles, not water.
