Birkenstock vs Dansko: Which Clog Suits You
The two dominant leather clog makers solve the same problem in opposite ways. A direct comparison of footbed, sole, fit and who each one actually suits.
Two different theories of the same shoe
Birkenstock and Dansko both make leather clogs for people who stand all day. They disagree almost entirely about how to do it.
The footbed
Birkenstock uses cork and latex under a suede lining, with a pronounced arch, a deep heel cup and a raised toe bar. It is firm at first and moulds to your foot over a few weeks. The result is highly personal — a broken-in Birkenstock footbed fits you and nobody else.
Dansko uses a padded, contoured footbed inside a rigid outer shell. There is far less moulding; the support comes from the shape being fixed and the sole doing the work.
The sole
This is the real difference. Dansko's rocker sole is stiff and curved, so your foot rolls from heel to toe rather than bending. It takes a few days to stop feeling strange, and then it feels effortless. It is also noticeably heavier and taller, which some people find unstable on stairs.
Birkenstock's EVA sole is lighter and flatter, with more ground feel and more flex. Less of a rolling motion, more of a normal walk.
Fit
Birkenstock runs in EU sizes with regular and narrow widths, and the footbed imprint is the guide — your foot should sit inside the moulded contours, not spill over them.
Dansko runs on EU sizing too but with a roomier toe box and a more forgiving fit overall. People with wide feet or bunions generally get on better with Dansko.
Who each one suits
Birkenstock suits a high or well-defined arch, a narrower foot, and anyone who wants the shoe to adapt to them. Also better if you dislike height or weight underfoot.
Dansko suits a wide foot, a flatter arch, plantar fasciitis, and long shifts on hard flat floors. Also the better choice if you want support immediately with no break-in patience.
Longevity
Both are repairable and both outlast almost anything at their price. Birkenstock footbeds and soles can be replaced by a cobbler, which effectively makes them indefinitely renewable. Dansko outsoles can be resoled but the shell is not replaceable.
