What to know about this sandal
Mephisto hand-assembles its uppers and uses a shock-absorbing heel insert, which is a quieter, softer take on the same problem Dansko solves with rigidity. Leather uppers breathe and mould, which matters more over a long day than any amount of padding does.
Cork wants sealing once or twice a year at the exposed rim. Untreated, it dries and crumbles at the edges; sealed, it lasts as long as the shoe. A rubber outsole grips wet floors in a way a smooth leather or wooden base does not, which is why it turns up on almost everything sold for kitchen and hospital work.
The adjustable strap takes up slack across the instep, which is the difference between a clog that stays put and one you grip with your toes. Built for jobs spent upright. Standing still and walking punish feet differently, and this is built for the first.
Leave about a centimetre in front of your longest toe, and check that your foot is not spilling over the sides of the footbed — that is a width problem, not a length one.
Condition every six to eight weeks for daily-wear shoes. More often than that and you soften the leather past the point where it holds shape.
