What to know about this mule
Dansko builds almost everything on a rigid rocker sole, so the shoe rolls you forward instead of bending at the ball of the foot. That is the whole reason the brand took over American hospitals. Suede is soft from the first wear because there is no surface finish to break in — and no surface finish to protect it either. A protector spray from day one is not optional.
Memory foam feels best on day one and slowly worse after that, because the foam takes a permanent set. Excellent for occasional wear, less so for daily shifts. A rubber outsole grips wet floors in a way a smooth leather or wooden base does not, which is why it turns up on almost everything sold for kitchen and hospital work.
A closed back holds the heel, which steadies it on stairs and satisfies the dress codes that specify an enclosed shoe. Treated for outdoor use, which in a leather clog means water resistance rather than waterproofing. Dry it away from heat.
Tan shows grain and wear more honestly than any other shade, and darkens the most over the first year. Most of these are built on EU lasts and converted inconsistently to US sizing. Where you can, work from the EU number.
Condition every six to eight weeks for daily-wear shoes. More often than that and you soften the leather past the point where it holds shape.
