What to know about this mule
Shearling lining compresses over a season and does not spring back, so the fit loosens slightly through the first winter. Buy snug.
Memory foam feels best on day one and slowly worse after that, because the foam takes a permanent set. Excellent for occasional wear, less so for daily shifts.
The open heel vents heat and comes off without bending down. It also means the shoe is held by your instep, not your heel — if you are curling your toes to keep it on, it is too big. A cold-weather clog. Lined uppers run warmer than they look, and are better indoors and on short outdoor trips than on long walks.
Leave about a centimetre in front of your longest toe, and check that your foot is not spilling over the sides of the footbed — that is a width problem, not a length one.
Condition every six to eight weeks for daily-wear shoes. More often than that and you soften the leather past the point where it holds shape.
