Spring Step's L'Artiste line leans decorative — hand-painted and tooled leathers on a conventional comfort footbed. Leather uppers breathe and mould, which matters more over a long day than any amount of padding does.
Cushioning absorbs impact, which helps if you walk a lot and helps less if you stand still. Standing rewards even pressure distribution over softness.
The buckle is what makes this workable on a high instep. Anything with a fixed vamp will press across the top of the foot and will not stretch enough to fix it. A cold-weather clog. Lined uppers run warmer than they look, and are better indoors and on short outdoor trips than on long walks.
Brown leather is allowed to age in a way black is not. Oiled browns lift into red-brown as the oils redistribute. Leave about a centimetre in front of your longest toe, and check that your foot is not spilling over the sides of the footbed — that is a width problem, not a length one.
Condition every six to eight weeks for daily-wear shoes. More often than that and you soften the leather past the point where it holds shape.
