Sandgrens still hand-nails Swedish alder bases in the traditional way, and will resole a pair rather than replace it. Leather stretches across the width over the first few weeks and barely at all in length. Buy for length, let width settle.
Cork wants sealing once or twice a year at the exposed rim. Untreated, it dries and crumbles at the edges; sealed, it lasts as long as the shoe. A wooden base does not flex anywhere. Your foot rolls over the curved front edge instead of bending, which takes about a week to stop feeling strange.
The adjustable strap takes up slack across the instep, which is the difference between a clog that stays put and one you grip with your toes.
Fit at the end of the day. Feet swell measurably over a shift, and a clog that fits at nine in the morning can be tight by seven.
Leather needs roughly a day to release the moisture it absorbed from your foot. Two pairs alternated each last more than twice as long as one worn daily.
